Across the 3,243 videos we have measured, the useful part starts at a median of 1:02. A quarter of them are delivering by 0:31. One in ten makes you wait past 3:47.

This is the one number in our measurement that is useful in the same second you read it. Everything else describes a video; this one tells you where to put the playhead.

A note on the numbers. Unlike the rest of this site, the figures on this page are frozen at the date above rather than recalculated on each visit. A report people cite should not move under them. When we run this census again it will be published as a new edition with a new date.

Half the library is delivering inside the first minute

Almost exactly half — 1,601 of 3,243 videos — has started paying off by the sixty-second mark, and a sixth of those started inside the first fifteen seconds.

268 videos start at 0:00, with no run-up of any kind. That is 8.3% of the library, and it is a smaller group than the usual complaint about YouTube intros would predict.

The shape of that chart is worth a second look. It is not a slope. It is a hump centred on the thirty-second-to-two-minute range, which is where just over half of everything in the library sits. That range is not an accident: it is roughly how long it takes a person to say what a video is about, who it assumes you are, and where it is going, which is work worth doing.

The tail is where the number earns its keep

Percentiles are more useful than an average here, because the average is dragged around by a handful of videos that take a very long time to arrive.

One video in ten does not start paying off until 3:47 or later, and one in a hundred takes more than 10:46. The slowest video we have measured started delivering at 30:45.

Those are the cases where knowing the number in advance changes the outcome. Not because the opening is dishonest — some of it is genuinely necessary — but because a viewer who already knows why they clicked can skip it and lose nothing. Three minutes and forty-seven seconds, repeated across a week of watching, is not a rounding error.

The subject you are in moves the wait by a factor of three

Tech news is the slowest, at 1:35. It is also, in our verdict census, the fourth most likely subject to produce a video that was not worth its runtime — the two go together, because a subject where the news itself takes forty seconds to state has to build the rest of the video out of something.

The fast end is instructive in a different way. Comedy at 0:32 and health and fitness at 0:46 are subjects where the viewer already knows the frame. Nobody needs to be told what a stretching routine is for, so nobody spends a minute explaining it.

The middle of that chart is tight — a dozen subjects sit between 0:50 and 1:12 — so read the two ends and treat the middle as an ordering rather than a set of estimates.

A longer video does not make you wait proportionally longer

The wait behaves like a fixed cost rather than a percentage. It grows with runtime, but nowhere near as fast.

Medians within each band. The share column is the median of each video's own wait divided by its own runtime, not a ratio of the two medians.

Median videos under ten minutes start delivering at 0:32; the ones between fifty and sixty minutes, at 2:31. That is nearly a fivefold difference in seconds — but as a share of the runtime it runs the other way, from 9.4% down to 1.6% for videos over an hour.

Which means the felt experience of “this video is all intro” is mostly an experience of short videos. An eight-minute video that takes ninety seconds to arrive has spent a fifth of itself clearing its throat. An hour-long one that takes the same ninety seconds has spent 2.5%, and you would not notice.

The last row breaks the pattern and we are leaving it visible rather than smoothing it: videos over an hour have a shorter median wait than videos of fifty to sixty minutes. Fifty videos is not enough to say why. It is enough to say that the run-up does not keep growing without limit as the runtime does, which is what the share column has been saying all along.

Arriving instantly is not the good sign it looks like

There is an obvious way to misuse this number, which is to treat a low one as a mark of quality. Our data does not support that.

Videos that begin delivering inside the first thirty seconds were not worth their runtime 26.4% of the time — nearly twice the rate of the videos that took between thirty seconds and a minute, at 14.1%. Past two minutes the failure rate climbs again, to 35.6% for videos that need more than five minutes to arrive.

So the curve has two bad ends and a good middle. A long wait is the obvious failure. The instant start is the quiet one: a video with nothing to set up is often a video with nothing behind the opening either.

The number is a navigation aid, not a verdict. It tells you where the video starts being worth your attention. Whether it is worth your attention once it starts is a different measurement, and we publish that one separately.

What to do with 1:02

The number is only worth publishing if it changes something on the next video you open. Three things it changes, in order of how much they help.

Scrub, but not to the median. Jumping to 1:02 on every video would cost you the frame on roughly half of them, because half arrive later than that. The useful move is the tail: if you already know why you clicked, the first two minutes are the cheapest thing in the video to sample rather than sit through.

Give an unfamiliar subject the full run-up. The wait is short in subjects where the viewer already has the frame and long in subjects where the video has to build one. If you are new to what you are watching, the opening minute is the part doing the most work for you, and skipping it is how people end up rewinding.

Treat a long wait as a question, not a verdict. A video that takes four minutes to arrive is in the slowest tenth of everything we measure. Sometimes that is a lecture with a genuine premise to establish. More often it is a video that will keep doing this, and the padding measurement is the one that tells the two apart.

How this was measured, and what it does not say

For each video we identify the point at which it stops setting up and starts delivering on what it promised, and we publish that as a timestamp. The reading is ours. Method and its limits are in what value density means.

The sample is not YouTube. It is 3,243 English-language explanatory videos in twenty subjects, assembled to build a recommendation library rather than to be representative of the platform. A library of explanatory video will have shorter run-ups than the platform as a whole.

One timestamp is a summary of a whole video. Some videos deliver, drift, and deliver again; a single number cannot show that, and it is not meant to. It marks the first point at which watching is better than waiting.

Several subject bars rest on small samples. Travel, gaming, comedy and DIY each carry fewer than eighty measured videos. The two ends of that chart are solid; the middle is closer than it looks.

A zero is a measurement, not a compliment. The 268 videos that start at 0:00 include both the ones that respect your time and the ones with nothing to introduce.

The figures are frozen at 25 August 2026. Scores are recalculated as the underlying measurement improves, so the live numbers on the shelves will already have moved slightly from these. This edition will not be edited; the next census will be published separately.
