The best YouTube summarizers for deciding what to watch (2026)

Most YouTube summarizers are built to replace a video. A few are built to help you choose one. Here is which is which, with the strengths of each.

How we chose

We looked at what people actually want when they reach for a YouTube summarizer: usually, to stop losing evenings to videos that did not deliver. So we sorted the tools by the job they do best, not by a single ranking.

Every fact below comes from the tool’s own store page or website, checked in September 2026. User counts and ratings change daily. We make Gistil, so read that entry with that in mind; we tried to hold it to the same standard as the others.

Gistil: best for deciding what to watch

What it does. Open a YouTube video and Gistil shows a score from 0 to 100 and a call in three metals: gold (70 and above, worth your time), silver (40 to 69, worth skimming) and copper (below 40, skip). Below it, a value map shows the video segment by segment, brighter where it is more useful. Play the useful part plays only those segments; Autopilot moves you past the rest while you watch. A short gist and key moments come with every verdict, and a separate video topic review says how fully the video covers its subject and what to look for elsewhere.

Measured by Gistil on 30 September 2026. The whole video scores 54, silver, so its useful segments are silver too: the metal belongs to the video, and brightness shows where the useful minutes are.

Strengths. It answers the question before you spend the hour. Videos Gistil has already judged open for free for everyone, and the score is the same for every viewer. It is on the Chrome Web Store and Firefox Add-ons, and the apps for iPhone and Android use the same account.

Three folded Gistil panels: Watch 20 of 27 min with a gold map, Watch 5 of 20 min with a silver map, and Nothing here is worth the time with a flat grey map.

Folded, the panel is one line: the minutes worth watching, the map in the video's metal, and the play button.

Limits. It works on videos with spoken content, judges a video in its original language, and does not handle music videos. Longest video: 1 hour on the free tier, 4 hours on the top plan. Its text is short on purpose; it is not a tool for reading a video instead of watching it.

Eightify: best for detailed summaries inside YouTube

What it does. A summary in about five seconds, key insights, timestamped navigation, a top comments overview and the full text of the video, in 40+ languages. It handles videos up to 10 hours.1

Strengths. The insights are customizable (more actionable, more controversial, a list or a Q&A, longer or shorter). It has apps for iOS and Android on the same account. On the Chrome Web Store it has 200,000 users and a 4.0 rating from 859 reviews.1

Limits. It summarizes; it does not score whether a video is worth watching. We did not find a Firefox add-on. Pro on the App Store is $9.99 a month or $59.99 a year.2

We compared the two in detail in Gistil vs Eightify.

YouTube Summary with ChatGPT & Claude (Glasp): best free summaries

What it does. A free extension that summarizes YouTube videos, articles and PDFs using ChatGPT, Claude, Mistral or Gemini, with clickable timestamps and one-click copy of the video’s text. You can set the summary length and write your own prompt.3

Strengths. It is the most widely installed tool on this list: 2,000,000 users and a 4.3 rating from 4.1K reviews on the Chrome Web Store.3 It also has a Firefox version.3 Its name is exactly what people search for.

Limits. Like any summarizer, it tells you what was said, not whether it was worth saying.

NoteGPT: best for turning videos into study material

What it does. Summaries and the full text of a video, even for videos that have no text track of their own (up to 2 hours), plus notes, mind maps, slides and podcasts from a video, an AI chat about the video, text download and translation into 40+ languages.4

Strengths. The widest set of outputs here, and the highest rating: 4.9 from 8.5K reviews, with 400,000 users on the Chrome Web Store.4 Useful when a video is already worth your time and you want to keep what it taught you.

Limits. Built for working with a video you have chosen, not for choosing one.

Skipd: best for a quick verdict from your phone

What it does. Paste a YouTube link and get a WATCH or SKIP IT verdict with key points and a score from 0 to 5, based on content density, duration-to-value ratio and how well the title matches the content.5

Strengths. It asks the same question Gistil asks, and it works without a browser extension: on the web, from a desktop bookmark, and from the Share menu on iPhone and Android.5 Clear pricing: 1 free video a month without an account, 5 with one, a €7 pack of 15, or Pro at €9.99 a month for 100.5

Limits. It lives outside the video page, so there is no map of useful parts and no playback of only those parts. Like Gistil, it works on videos with spoken content.5

Smartic: best for judging search results

What it does. Smartic labels the videos on a YouTube search results page with a score, a watch / maybe / skip call, a confidence level and key takeaways.6

Strengths. It works one step earlier than the others: before you open anything. Good for tutorial searches where the first page is full of lookalike videos.6

Limits. Chrome only, as far as we could see; we did not find pricing on the page we checked.6

SponsorBlock: best for skipping the known interruptions

What it does. A community-run extension that skips sponsor reads, intros, outros, subscribe reminders and other segments that other viewers have marked.7

Strengths. Free, open source, with a public database, on Chrome (2,000,000 users, 4.6 from 3.5K reviews) and Firefox.7 It pairs well with any tool on this list.

Limits. It skips interruptions; it does not judge whether the rest of the video is worth your time, and it depends on someone having marked the video first.

Also worth knowing: YouTube Premium Jump ahead

YouTube Premium has a Jump ahead button that takes you to the point most viewers fast-forward to. It does not appear on every video, is available in a limited set of languages, and is not part of Premium Lite.8 If you already pay for Premium, try it before installing anything.

Which one should you use?

  • You want to read instead of watch: Eightify, Glasp or NoteGPT.
  • You want to know whether to watch, and watch less: Gistil. Skipd if you mostly decide from your phone by sharing links. Smartic if your problem is the search results page.
  • You just want the sponsor reads gone: SponsorBlock, alongside anything else.

Summaries are good at compression and bad at judgement: they read just as well when the video was thin. We wrote about why in why AI summaries of long videos mislead. If that is the problem you have, start with a verdict, not a summary.

よくある質問

What is the best free YouTube summarizer?

For free text summaries, YouTube Summary with ChatGPT & Claude by Glasp describes itself as a free extension and has the largest user base on the Chrome Web Store of the tools here. For deciding whether to watch, Gistil opens every video it has already judged for free and gives 5 new videos free on sign-up.

Can a summarizer tell me if a video is worth watching?

Most cannot, because they summarize whatever is there with the same confidence. Tools built for that question give a verdict instead: Gistil scores videos from 0 to 100 inside YouTube, Skipd gives a watch or skip verdict for a pasted link, and Smartic labels search results as watch, maybe or skip.

What is the difference between a summarizer and a verdict tool?

A summarizer tells you what a video says, so you can skip watching it. A verdict tool tells you whether the video is worth your time and where the useful parts are, so you watch less but still watch.

Is there a tool that skips the boring parts automatically?

Yes. Gistil's Play the useful part plays only the most useful segments of a video. SponsorBlock skips sponsor reads, intros and reminders that its community has marked. YouTube Premium has a Jump ahead button that goes to the point most viewers skip to.

Which tools work on Firefox?

Of the tools here, SponsorBlock and Glasp's YouTube Summary have Firefox versions, and so does Gistil (Firefox Add-ons). We could not find Eightify on Firefox Add-ons in September 2026.
